This Fall 2024 studio entitled Welcome to Portland: Representation examined representation as a form of agency for architects. We were tasked to respond to an existing international style building designed by John Yeon on riverside site in downtown Portland. My design focuses on representations of the underground systems that make cities like Portland possible using the language of bas relief panels. Panels are arranged along a path that wraps around the existing building, leading visitors down into the ground and up again. The path responds to the pinwheel arrangement of the existing building. Based on comments from reviews, further development of the scheme might include adding interior spaces such as cafes and meeting spaces along the ramped path.
